Beatrix Potter loved the countryside and spent most of her childhood drawing and studying the animals she found whilst exploring, as well the many pets she kept at home. Her passion for the natural world began with her annual family holidays to the forests and rivers of Scotland, and grew further when she moved to the Lake District later in her life. These beautiful landscapes sparked her imagination, and inspired the creation of her famous series of little books.

Royalties from Beatrix's books enabled her to purchase a Cumbrian farmhouse called Hill Top, beginning an association with the Lake District that influenced the rest of her life. As well as becoming a successful sheep farmer, she worked tirelessly as an active conservationist with the National Trust to preserve areas of natural beauty and historic interest throughout England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Thanks to Beatrix's devotion, much of the Lake District is now protected, and in the care of the National Trust.
